On Saturday, Tania, our daughter, her boyfriend, and I went fishing. We arrived at the dock around 6:30 am, loaded up the boat, and set off. The conditions offshore were favorable early, with waves measuring 1.8 ft at six seconds, and lite winds; however, the forecast showed the winds would pick up about 8:00 and continue to increase to 15kts, so we decided it was best to stay within the river for our fishing adventure.
Our first fishing spot was the open area just south of Harbor Isle, which has proven to be a fruitful spot for snapper. Although the bite was slow, we managed to reel in a few fish in this area. Most of our catches turned out to be short mutton snappers, but Scott was fortunate to catch a short black grouper.
As the morning progressed and our cooler remained largely empty, we decided to move on from this spot. As we approached the South Causeway bridge, we noticed an abundance of silver flashes in the water, sparking our curiosity. Intrigued, we decided to drift in that area and see what we could catch.
Once again, the bite was sluggish, and our catches mostly consisted of short mutton snappers with the occasional catfish. Frustrated by our lack of success, we decided to try our luck at the next location, the turn basin. The area teemed with life, as baitfish leaped out of the water all around us. However, despite the promising signs, our luck didn’t change, and we struggled to bring in noteworthy catches.
To wrap up our day of fishing, we headed towards the North Causeway bridge. The bite was marginally better in this spot, but unfortunately, we still couldn’t find any fish worthy of filling our cooler. Scott and Tori didn’t seem to get any bites at the bridge, and although I managed to get a few nibbles, I couldn’t seem to hook a fish. However, Tania proved to be the exception, landing an impressive count of 15-20 short lane snappers. We ended up running out of bait about 10am. At this point we decided to call it a day and make our way back to the dock.
Just as we returned to the dock, the skies began to darken, and soon enough, we found ourselves engulfed in a severe storm during our journey home. We felt incredibly grateful that we had made it back when we did, avoiding the worst of the weather. Despite the slow bite, we all enjoyed the time spent on the boat. Tania and I pray all anglers who ventured out over the weekend had a safe and blessed trip, filled with tight lines and good times!
