Last Saturday afternoon, Tori and Scott asked if we could go back to the spillway. Tori did not go on our previous trip on Thursday, and she was excited by the thought of catching a Mayan Cichlid. I looked at the weather and ran to Jigz Bait and Tackle, picked up some shiners, and then headed to the spillway.

We arrived at the spillway about 2:30pm. Since it had just stopped raining the spillway was dumping a lot of water and the water was all stirred up. I was hopeful this would trigger the snook and bass to bite since the water would be pushing smaller bait fish over the spillway.

We fished the spillway about an hour and the bite was slow. We mostly had spotted gar stealing our baits. I was using the larger shiners in hopes of a bass or a snook, while Tania, Scott, and Tori were all using the smallest of the shiners in hopes of catching a cichlid.

I caught the first fish, which is usually a bad sign for the fishing trip. Since I am usually helping everyone with bait and tackle. I landed a decent size spotted gar. Tania landed the next fish, which was a micro snook, and just before the storms hit us, Tori landed a decent size cichlid.

Although the window of opportunity closed quickly due to the storms in the area, we managed to have success on our fishing adventure. The kids absolutely loved catching the cichlids. They thought it was the coolest thing to catch them in the wild, especially since they usually only see them in the local fish shops in PA.

Even though the children have gone home, the memories we created this past week will live forever with Tania and I. We pray all who make it out this week make these types of memories for themselves and their families. May you have blessed safe trips full of tight lines and good times.
