On Saturday, with the winds forecasted and the fact I had a sinus infection, I canceled the boat Tania and I had reserved. I didn’t feel like being on the boat, rocking back and forth with my compromised balance. At about 10:00 am, Tania and I discussed going surf fishing, and with high tide about noon, I agreed and loaded the car.
We arrived at Blue Heron Beach at about 11:00 am. We were happy that only a few people were in the parking lot; however, the north wind blew harder than I anticipated. I loaded the beach cart up as Tania went to the beach to find us a spot to fish.
The water was a beautiful powder blue, so I was hopeful we would catch some pompano. Unfortunately, the bite was pretty slow. An hour into our relaxing day at the beach, a gentleman who had been fishing with his grandson was heading home. As he walked past, we had a nice chat, and I found out he had caught seven pompano; however he had caught them between 10:00 and 10:45 am.
Undeterred, Tania and I remained fishing. We had determined that we would leave by 2:30 pm if we had not caught anything. At about 2:25 pm, our one rod was hit. Unfortunately, we did not land anything. Not long after, the same rod went again. While I was reeling it in, another rod went, and Tania landed a decent Pompano this time.
Since we had just caught some pompano, we decided to stick around a bit longer. We ended up catching another pompano at about 2:45 pm. Unfortunately, that was the last pompano we caught. At 3:00 pm, we started to pack up, and while I was reeling in one of the rods, I had a spiny puffer fish on, so both Tania and I caught fish.
On Sunday, I prepared blacked pompano paired with black beans and rice. I was so happy to be able to eat some fresh pompano for supper. Click the link below for the recipe.
Tania and I send our best wishes to all fellow anglers, hoping your fishing adventures are safe, blessed, and full of tight lines and good times! Until next time, keep casting and chasing those dreams on the water.
