Breaking in New Gear: Spillway Fishing Adventures on the Treasure Coast

I had so much fun fishing the canal the other day. With the forecasted winds this weekend (E20-25Kt), I talked Tania into going to Bass Pro on Saturday and buying a few light-action rods. Tania paired her rod with a Phluger President 25, and I put a Shimano Serria 1000 on my rod.

Tania and I decided to hit a few spillways this morning and break in our new rods/reels. We started at our favorite spillway on St. James, but unfortunately, it did not produce any fish—heck, we didn’t even get a bite.

The next spot was a spillway on Selvitz. This spot seemed more promising as we saw much life. Tania had multiple hits but never hooked up. I was a bit discouraged as I wasn’t even getting a bite. But just as we were ready to call it at this spot, I hooked up and landed a small Mayan Cichlid. In my next cast, I hooked up with a Redear Sunfish, but my leader broke when I pulled the fish out of the water.

At this point, Tania suggested going to the Savannas on Midway east of US 1. The bite started slow, and Tania started to think we made a mistake coming here. Shortly after that, I caught four bass back-to-back. Then the bite died off, and we went another 15 minutes walking along the Savannas without another bite.

Tania suggested returning to the first spillway one last time, as we know there are fish there. It didn’t take long for me to catch a Redear Sunfish. Then, the next 15 minutes were quiet. Tania said she was done fishing and was frustrated that she had not caught a single fish. I was disappointed she didn’t catch any fish either, as I am trying to get her excited about artificial bait fishing, but hard to do when she isn’t catching anything.

All in all, we spent an hour and a half together. It was a beautiful morning, and God blessed us with some fish. Tania and I send our best wishes to all fellow anglers. May your fishing adventures be safe, blessed, and filled with tight lines and good times! Until next time, keep casting and chasing those dreams on the water.
