A Slow Day on the Water: Fishing Adventures with Tania

This week went by so slow. Tania and I were super excited to get back on the water and to break in her new jigging rod as well as try out some of the new jigs we bought. The weather was looking great to get offshore and with our last outing seeing permit caught we headed for the boils. The only downside was high tide was not until 11:30am and all the permit we caught were at high tide with clean water.

We arrived at the dock about 6:20am, we were slightly ahead of schedule as we did not need to stop and get shrimp or ice as we had some left over from last trip and with us focusing on jigging, I did not buy any live shrimp. We loaded the boat up and were heading out the marina by 6:40am.

We made it out the inlet about 6:50am and it was as calm as a lake. It’s not often Tania and I make it out when it’s this flat. We made the run to the boils pretty quick and we had wet lines by 7:05am. The bite was slow and as the sun came up, I could tell why, as the water seemed pretty dirty.

With the lite breeze and the currents, we drifted mostly west, however it was a pretty slow drift. The bite was as quick as the drift was. The action was unusually slow at the boils; we didn’t see much in the way for life on the sonar or in the water. It was about 10 minutes into the first drift that Tania got the first bite of the day.

We drifted another 10 to 15 minutes before we got a few more bites, and then Tania finally caught the first fish on her new rod, a tomtate grunt. Shortly after she landed another fish, unfortunately it was a hardhead catfish. At this point I was ready to move to deeper water and try for some snapper; however, Tania wanted to wait until high tide to try for another permit. She told me the water would clear up as the tide moved in and we were both hopeful that waiting the tide out would pay off for us.

As the tide started to come up the water did start to clear up and we started to see life. Near the east buoy there were tons of glass minnows and I was marking a lot of fish on the bottom; however, at this point they were not chewing what we were throwing. We ended up fishing until 11:30am, which was the top of high tide and I think we only caught nine fish between the two of us. Tania caught two grunts, a hardhead catfish, a mutton snapper and a short lane snapper. I caught two pork fish, a rockfish, and a lane snapper.

Even though the bite was slow, God blessed us with his wonderful creations. We saw a spotted eagle ray, about six turtles, 50+ dolphins and countless jellyfish. I think with the combination of the water being dirty and warm, 82°F, as well as all the dolphins in the area contributed to the slow day of fishing.

Tania and I pray all who made it out this weekend had tighter lines than we had. We also hope your trips were blessed and safe. For those of you heading out this week, may you have tight lines and good times!
