It was October 4th, 2019, and I remember waking up early in the morning, filled with excitement for our fishing trip. Tania and I were all set to explore the waters of Bear Point Cove. As we set sail, there was a tinge anticipation in the air.
The tide was just starting to come in when we arrived at the fishing spot; however, the current was still flowing in the opposite direction, making the conditions less than ideal. The signs of life were scarce, with only a few birds and some mullet darting about. Disappointed by the lack of activity and not spotting the coveted 3 B’s (bait, boils, or birds), we decided to spend around 30 minutes fishing in areas A and B. Unfortunately, luck didn’t favor us here, except for a funny incident with a seagull got entangled in my wife’s fishing line.
We used various topwater lures in bone color and black and silver, hoping to attract some action. Additionally, I tried using slam shady paddle tail lures and a DOA in black and white. The water was clear, and the temperature was a comfortable 79 degrees, but the fish seemed elusive.
Tania, not as patient with artificial bait fishing, was starting to get bored without much action. So, we decided to move to a familiar dock where we usually fish for sheepshead during the winter season. The current was still outgoing, which meant the dock was at its prime.
My wife reverted to her tried-and-tested Carolina rig with live shrimp. It didn’t take long before she started catching fish after fish – a personal best redfish measuring 24 inches, a snook, a couple of jacks, and some snappers (lane and mangrove). Her success was evident, while I managed to catch just one jack using a bone-colored topwater lure.
As the day wore on, I also tried my luck with the slam shady paddle tail, but it seemed that the baitfish and predators were more interested in my wife’s offerings. She once again out fished me with her fishing skills, leaving me in awe of her prowess.
Despite my mixed feelings of frustration and admiration, I was happy to witness her success and enjoy the day on the water together. We pray everyone who ventured out this week had a blessed and safe trip. Hopefully you made memories that would stay with you for a lifetime. May all who head out this weekend have tight lines and good times!
