Canal Casting: A Lunch Hour Fishing Escape

Strong winds kept the boat docked, so I decided to head to the canals for a lunch-break fishing session. The forecast for this weekend doesn’t look promising either, with 15-knot winds and 5-6 ft seas making it another no-go for the boat.

Around 11:00 a.m., I packed my bike with some tackle, pliers, a rag, and my rod and reel and pedaled out. My first stop was a canal on Selvitz Rd, about two miles from home. I spent about 15 minutes casting, and within a few casts, I hooked a bass that got away but landed a feisty Mayan cichlid. With just those two bites, I decided to hit one of our favorite spillways before returning to work.

The second spot paid off! I caught two bass, three cichlids, and even a nice-sized bluegill. It was a quick but productive session, and I made it home just around noon. That rod holder on the bike has been a game-changer—it’s giving me more flexibility to get a line wet during lunch.
