Captain Ed was at it again on Monday. He left the dock about 7:00am with his buddy Lenny, John, and Chris. They picked up some pilchards on the way out the inlet and they went straight for the boils. The arrived at the boils about 8:00am and there were already lots of boats already fishing. I believe he told me there were already 10 boats there on a Monday morning.
With all the boats already at the boils made it difficult to drift as he normally would, but he made do. This was Chris and John fist saltwater trip and Captain Ed wanted to make it a memorable one. They started drifting dropping jigs tipped with Shrimp. They also live lined a pilchard as well as put one on the bottom to increase their chances of catching fish.
It didn’t take them long to start hooking up. Captain Ed told me they had nonstop action until they decided to call it a day about 11:30am when the wind picked up. He told me they caught well over a hundred fish, 13 species, with the majority of them being Jack Crevalle and Blue Runners. But they did put a good number of fish in the cooler.
The most memorable fish they caught today was a very large Permit. Captain Ed told me the most memorable moment was fighting the permit. John hooked into this fish using light tackle, so it put up a good fight and took them over 20 minutes to get it to the boat. He mentioned they had to chase it down and when they got it to the boat a large shark came up and tried to grab it. Captain Ed thought for sure they lost the Permit, but it came to the surface trying to get away from the shark and he gaffed it! This was the largest fish John has ever caught!
They Came home with one of the largest Permit Captain Ed has ever caught, three Lane Snapper, a few Spanish Mackerel, a few Pompanos, and a Croaker. He mentioned they lost another Permit after fighting it for a bit. Captain Ed believes they pulled the hook from trying to horse it up do to having shark around.
Captain Ed said he spoiled his friends Chris and John on today’s trip. They are going to be hard pressed to have another banner day like they did on Monday. Tania and I pray all who make it out this week a blessed and safe trip. May you all have tight lines and good times!
