Friday, I decided to make poor man lobster with the Sheepshead I caught on Thursday. I also got a lobster tail from Publix to compare them side by side. It was a quick and easy lunch, and it was delicious. With that being said the poor man’s lobster was pretty good; however, it was not as good as the real thing. The Sheepshead was nice and firm, but the texture just wasn’t the same. Overall, I am glad I tried it however I like the Sheepshead much better in my sheepshead chowder.
Poor Man’s Lobster Recipe:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup salt
- 1 pound Sheepshead
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 lemon
- In a medium to large pot bring 2 quarts of water to a boil
- Add in sugar, salt, 2 slices of lemon and any other species you like and bring the water back to a boil.
- I added a 1tbs of five pepper powder, siracha salt, and garlic powder.
- Cut the Sheepshead 1inch pieces (so it cooks faster) and add to water.
- Boil for about 5-10 minutes, the Sheepshead will start to float when it’s done.
- In the meantime, melt butter in a pot on low heat. Do not boil the butter. I added Frank’s Redhot Powder to the salt.
- Remove Sheepshead from water, squeeze a little fresh lemon on it and serve with melted butter (I like to completely submerge my sheepshead in the melted butter, like you would do with lobster).
If you have already tried this or you use my recipe let me know how you like it. Looking forward to reading your reviews!
